water storage tank clean & disinfection

Once water is stored it is then open to the environment. Over time dirt, dust, debris, mould and harmful bacteria can build up in the tank causing the water quality to reduce significantly often resulting in stagnation.
Stagnant, low circulation water sources can be a potential breeding ground for unwanted and harmful bacteria. Stagnation can be caused by many factors including poor system design, under-utilisation of the water, often as a result of an excessive quantity of stored water. Issues in the water system causing blockages or poor flow will also contribute to poor water quality. To help reduce the possibility of poor water quality regular cleaning and disinfection is essential.
Cold water storage tanks are a common source of nutrients for biofilm and bacteria. Over time a dirty tank can develop sediment and become contaminated with organic matter such as leaves and small animals in extreme cases.
To maintain water quality the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommends the regular inspection of water storage tanks and to clean and disinfect them as necessary.
Potable/wholesome water storage tanks (containing water for consumption) should be cleaned and disinfected on an annual basis as per DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate) specification.
